Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 2 June) is Defiance, the 2008 war epic starring Daniel Craig (Casino Royale, Knives Out).
Based on a true story, the film begins in 1941 during World War II. It follows four Jewish brothers (Craig, George MacKay, Jamie Bell and Liev Schreiber) who escape their Nazi-occupied homeland of West Belarus in Poland, taking refuge in the forest where they played in childhood.
"Seeking a way to avenge the deaths of their loved ones, the brothers turn their daily struggle for survival into a battle against the Nazis," the plot synopsis adds.
"As news of their exploits spreads, others join the fray, willing to risk their lives for even brief freedom."
Defiance was directed by Edward Zwick, who also made the acclaimed war dramas Blood Diamond, Glory, and The Last Samurai.
Upon release, the movie was praised for its performances, its "engaging" story, and its spotlighting of overlooked history, though some criticised it for inaccuracies.
Defiance is airing on TV tonight on BBC Two at 11.30pm. The film is also currently streaming on Prime Video.
