Tributes have poured in following the naming of a woman killed in a farming accident in Sligo over the weekend.

Vanessa Jones, aged in her 50s, was fatally injured following the incident in Ballymote, Co Sligo on Saturday, June 29.

Ms Jones was struck by a vehicle while loading turf onto a trailer and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The mother of three has been described by those offering condolences as a “bright joyful woman” who will be “forever missed.”

In a statement to JOE, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “A women in her 50s has died following an incident in Ballymote, Co Sligo on Saturday, 29th June 2024.

“Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the rural area of Clooncose shortly after 4.20pm, where a woman had been seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while loading turf onto a trailer.

“She was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

“The Coroner has been notified, and her body has been removed to the mortuary at Sligo University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

“The scene was preserved for forensic examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and inquiries are ongoing.”

Among the many posts of condolences on her death notice, one person said: “Such sad news to hear of Vanessa. She was a breath of fresh air and her raucous laugh was contagious.”

Another added: “Deepest sympathy to all of Vanessa’s family. She was a very special person. Full of fun and love for her family and friends. We are all devastated to hear of Vanessa’s sad passing. She was a truly amazing lady.”

Ms Jones is survived by her children Eva, Rory and Aidan.

Her funeral will take place on Thursday, July 4, in Ballysumaghan Church, Sooey.
