Joseph Loftus

Heartbreaking news.

Tributes have been raining in after the death of Brennans Bread founder, Joseph Brennan, was confirmed earlier today.

Mr Brennan, who was regularly referred to as ‘Old Mr Brennan’, died surrounded by his family at their home in Cabinteely, Dublin, last Sunday.

Mr Brennan first started baking loaves of what would become Brennans Bread over 50 years ago in a one room bakery on Fumbally Lane in Dublin.

Soon after, due to his hard work and innovation, success struck, and the small bakery went onto become one of the biggest in all of Ireland.

Many remember Mr Brennan not just for his bread, but also for his voice, as it was regularly played on radio advertisements for the company, forever ending with their famous slogan, ‘Today’s bread today’.

Mr Brennan’s death notice reads: “Brennan, Joseph A, (Cabinteely, Dublin 18) – May 26, 2024. (Peacefully) Surrounded by his loving family at home. Predeceased by his loving wife Jean.

“Much loved father of David, Declan, Colm, Suzanne, Deborah, Michelle and Joseph. Sadly missed by his grandchildren, his great grandchild, daughter in laws, brothers, sister, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

“May he Rest in Peace.”

Many members of the public paid tribute to Mr Brennan with one writing: “Sincere sympathy to all the Brennan family on the sad passing of your Dad.

“Joe was a great innovator in the bakery business, a great entrepreneur and possessed a very sharp mind and more importantly was a kind and gentle being.

“May he now Rest in Eternal Peace.”

A second wrote: “Deepest condolences to all the Brennan family on the passing of your dad. I enjoy his bread every single day. How lucky the man above is to have your dad making him his daily bread.”
