This was after ‘failed attempts to sedate the animal’.
Gardaí have confirmed that a pitbull was shot by the Armed Response Unit after attacking residents in Cork city this week.
This is the third reported major dog attack in Ireland in recent weeks.
In a statement to JOE, a Garda spokesperson said that on Thursday (6 June) at 5.20pm, Togher Gardaí and the Armed Response Unit attended at a private residence in Ballyphehane following reports of a pitbull terrier attacking residents.
“A male and female injured by the dog were transported to Cork University Hospital for medical assessment and treatment,” the statement read.
“Gardaí engaged with the owner of the dog, and after failed attempts to sedate the animal, it was shot by the Armed Response Unit and euthanised by the vet.”

In a separate incident on Tuesday night, Gardaí attended the scene where a 23-year-old – later named locally as Nicole Morey – was fatally injured following a dog attack at a domestic residence in Ballyneety in Limerick.
During the course of making the area safe, Gardaí from the Regional Armed Support Unit encountered a number of aggressive dogs on the property.
“One dog was destroyed and three dogs were restrained by Gardaí. The three dogs have been seized by the Dog Warden,” a Garda spokesperson said on Wednesday.
It was later reported that all four dogs were XL bullies and that the remaining three were also put down.
Gardaí, meanwhile, are also investigating a separate incident that took place on Wednesday, 29 May at around 8.30pm in People’s Park in Limerick City, in which a child was bitten by a dog.
A Garda spokesperson said the animal was “not a restricted breed”.
