Man, 40s, hospitalised with serious injuries following Dublin city attack

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

A man in his 40s has been hospitalised with serious injuries following an assault in the north inner city of Dublin in the early hours of Sunday.

The incident occurred on O’Connell Street and Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin 1, at approximately 1am.

Gardaí arrived at the scene of two incidents involving a number of individuals, and arrested two men, one in his 30s and another in his 40s, upon arrival.

Gardaí are now looking to speak with any person who was in the Cathal Brugha Street area, near the Living Room Bar, between 12.40am and 1am and any individuals who were on O’Connell Street Upper near the Spar Shop / Funland/ Tourism Office, opposite the Spire, between 12.40am and 1am.

In a statement to JOE on Sunday afternoon, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí are investigating an assault which occurred on O’Connell Street and Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin 1 this morning, Sunday 23rd June 2024.

!At approximately 1am this morning, Gardaí on patrol in the city centre were alerted to two incidents involving a number of individuals on Cathal Brugha Street and O’Connell Street Upper and attended. 

“Upon arrival, two suspects were identified and arrested near the scene.

“A man, aged in his 40s, has been taken to the Mater Hospital to be treated for serious injuries sustained in this incident.

“No other injuries have been reported.

“The two arrested men, aged in their 20s and 30s, are currently detained at a Garda Station in Dublin City Centre.

“A scene is currently held for examination.

“Gardaí are looking to speak with any individuals who were in the Cathal Brugha Street area, near the Living Room Bar, between 12:40am and 1:00am and any individuals who were on O’Connell Street Upper near the Spar Shop / Funland/ Tourism Office, opposite the Spire, between 12:40am and 1:00am this morning.

“Anyone who may have camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Store Street Garda Station on 01 666 8000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
