No April fools.

A raft of energy price increases are set to affect one million Irish households with increases starting from today and continuing throughout the month of April.

Customers of SSE Airtricity will see their electricity prices increase by 6.2% and gas prices increase by 4.5%.

Meanwhile, Pinergy electricity prices are set to rise by 4.2%.

Between the two companies, it means electricity prices will increase for around 270,000 households while 85,000 households will feel the pinch of the gas increase.

From 5 April, Energia will increase its electricity prices by 8.6% and its gas prices by 5.7%, meaning customers will, on average, pay around €100 more for electricity and €50 more for gas annually.

220,000 customers are set to be affected by the two price increases.

Then on 12 April, Bord Gás Energy is raising its electricity prices by 8%, in a move that will add around €80 to the average customer’s annual bill and affect over 350,000 households. However, the company’s freeze on gas prices remains in place for the moment.

Panda Power, Iberdrola, Glowpower, and Flogas are also increasing prices later this month.

Electric Ireland has said it won’t increase its prices for the time being having last raised prices back in October 2020.

“Energy prices, which collapsed at the height of the pandemic, have begun to increase in recent months as the world economy opens back up,” Daragh Cassidy, Head of Communications at bonkers.ie said.

“What’s more, transmission and distribution network charges – or more simply the charges for maintaining and running the country’s gas and electricity networks – have been increased by the energy regulator in recent months.

“These charges make up around 30% of the price we pay for our energy and the increases are now unfortunately being passed on to customers too.”
