The scariest ending ever is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Blair Witch

Your Thursday evening movie menu has arrived!

Netflix has just added 2023’s best scary movie today, so you’ve got that to go with! Or if not that, there are plenty of other movie options on the telly tonight too…

Julius Caesar – BBC Four – 8pm
Marlon Brando and James Mason headline this 1953 epic retelling of Shakespeare’s epic drama.

Wild Card – FilmFour – 9pm
A dark and not-all-that-great thriller starring Jason Statham as a man out for revenge against the criminals who brutalised his friend.

National Lampoon’s Vacation – Comedy Central – 9pm
Chevy Chase takes his family on a road trip across America. It does not go well. For them at least… it goes pretty funnily for us.

Vehicle 19 – Legend – 9pm
The late great Paul Walker stars in this action thriller about a criminal on the run from crooked cops.

The Blair Witch Project – Sky Sci-Fi – 9pm

Our big pick tonight is The Blair Witch Project, the film that absolutely divides audiences into either (A) properly terrified, or (B) properly confused as to why everyone was terrified. For this writer, the unbearable tension building throughout was almost too much to take, right up until that final scene, which remains etched into my psyche to this very day. If you miss it tonight, The Blair Witch Project is also available to watch with a NOW Cinema Membership.

Cobra – ITV4 – 10pm
Stallone stars in this dark and gritty and violent and mostly unentertaining action thriller.

The Shining – BBC Four – 10pm
Named by one to be one of the best horror movies of all time.

Censor – FilmFour – 10.50pm
A fantastic horror fronted by Ireland’s own Niamh Algar, about a film censor who believes she has found her missing sister… as the star of a questionably violent movie.

Gangs of New York – FilmFour – 12.35am
Scorsese pairs up Daniel Day Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio for this big, brash retelling of the early days of the Big Apple.

Jacob’s Ladder – AMC – 12.40am
A properly twisted horror about a man (Tim Robbins) who is finding it increasingly difficult to separate his real life from his terrifying hallucinations.

Let Us Prey – Legend – 12.45am
Irish stars Liam Cunningham and Pollyanna McIntosh are in this intense horror set within the walls of remote Scottish police station.
