One scene in particular had everyone talking.
While we’ve all enjoyed a pretty warm weekend considering the time of the year, it looks like the weather is reverting back to normal shortly enough. So why not get cosy and enjoy a couple of films to start off your week?
There’s some great choices of movies on TV this evening, including fantasies, horrors and thrillers – all perfect for autumnal viewing. Take your pick below and enjoy!
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World – FilmFour – 6.20pm
Stars of A Beautiful Mind, Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany team up once again for this swashbuckling period drama set during the Napoleonic wars.
The film follows Crowe as Aubrey, captain in the Royal Navy, and Bettany as Dr. Stephen Maturin, the ship’s surgeon, who are ordered to hunt down a powerful French vessel off the South American coast.
The Mummy – ITV4 – 6.40pm
Academy Award-winning comeback king Brendan Fraser stars in this fantasy about a treasure-hunting soldier who reawakens an ancient Egyptian princess looking for revenge.
The Loft – HorrorXtra – 9pm
An English remake (red flag #1) of an erotic thriller (red flag #2), says all that needs to be said. It’s got a very intriguing cast including Karl Urban, James Marsden, and Wentworth Miller. It’s got a much less intriguing Rotten Tomatoes score of 14%.
A Time to Kill – FilmFour – 9pm
Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Spacey, Donald and Kiefer Sutherland all star in this Joel Schumacher-directed legal drama based off the John Grisham novel of the same name. A decent flick, but probably should be better considering the cast.
Let Him Go – TG4 – 9.30pm
Diane Lane and Kevin Costner star in this 2020 Western as a retired sheriff and his wife who try to rescue their grandson from a dangerous family living off-the-grid.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World – AMC – 10.40pm
2012 apocalyptic drama starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley as two strangers who form a bond shortly before, well, the end of the world. It’s charming and sweet, but kind of middling. Probably worth a watch.
Don’t Look Now – BBC2 – 11.15pm
Our pick of the movies on TV tonight is arguably one of the most controversial films of 70s.
Part horror, part mystery, part drama, Don’t Look Now stars Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland as a married couple who, after travelling to Venice following the death of their daughter, encounter an elderly psychic who brings a warning from the beyond.
The controversy comes from a particular sex scene that, while pretty tame by today’s standards, was enough to get worldwide attention back in the early 70s. Intercut with great editing, the scene is so realistically portrayed that both lead actors have had to deny it wasn’t just acting on many occasions.
Apart from the controversy, Don’t Look Now is a suspenseful classic – a haunting examination of grief and despair, with a brilliant score to boot.
Locke – FilmFour -12am
Like Phone Booth on wheels, this very tense thriller stars Tom Hardy and is filmed almost entirely within the confines of his character’s car. Olivia Colman, Ruth Wilson, Andrew Scott and Tom Holland all star on the other end of the phoneline.
