Bed bugs spotted in another UK city as worries of infestation grow

Joseph Loftus

Warnings have been issued.

Bed bugs have waved au revoir to Paris and they’ve travelled up to Manchester, it appears.

Bed bugs, which have been striking fear into mattresses across Europe for the past week, have been spotted on board a bus window in Manchester just days after they were noticed on a passenger’s leg on the London underground.

Taking to X, one concerned Mancunion bus rider wrote: “Do something about this quickly.”

FirstBus, who operates the transport service, replied: “This is really concerning to see and we do apologise for this.”

Numerous other councils across the UK have had to issue warnings about bedbugs.

Luton Council said: “The pest control service is currently receiving an alarming number of bed bug jobs on a weekly basis.

“Successful treatment can be a lengthy process and the council does not have limitless resources to counter this pest.”

Bedfordshire Council also said that they had received an “alarming number” of calls about the insects.

The news comes after a major outbreak in Paris resulting in an out-and-out war with the bitey little insects leading the city’s deputy mayor, Emmanuel Gregoire, to describe them as a “scourge” and a “public health problem”.

If you believe that you’ve already got bedbugs then they can be difficult to get rid of, however, the BBC reports that the best way to go about eliminating them includes

  • Washing contaminated bedding and clothing on a hot wash and tumble dry on a hot setting for at least 30 minutes.
  • Putting the clothing or bedding in a plastic bag and put in the freezer for three or four days.
  • And cleaning the house regularly as bedbugs can be found in both clean and dirty places.
