Sony could cut up to 10,000 jobs worldwide
According to Japanese news sources, Sony could cut up to 10,000 jobs worldwide over the next year as it tries to once again turn a profit.
Back in the day Sony had it all. The Walkman reigned supreme and everyone wanted a Sony. It didn’t matter whether it was a TV or a fridge, it was the must have. However, thanks to strong competitors such as Apple and Samsung Sony has taken a hit in its global sales.
The Nikkei Business Daily said Sony’s decision to cut 6% of its total workforce comes as it struggles with weak TV sales and swelling losses.
However, a Sony spokeswoman would not confirm the reports of worldwide job cuts, but the new CEO Kazuo Hirai is holding a press conference on Thursday. We’ll just have to wait and see if anyone in Ireland is going to be directly affected.
Earlier this year Sony reported a massive €1.48bn loss for the October-December business quarter and more than doubled its projected loss for the full fiscal year through March 2013. So even they know full well that things in the company are going to get a little tougher from now on.
