Video: Ronaldo and Messi gave each other the cold shoulder last night
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo may be the best footballers in the world, but the best of friends? Maybe not.
After some of the childish carry-on that’s gone on between the two teams over the last couple of seasons, not all of the Barcelona and Real Madrid players are bosom buddies, but they can usually be relied upon to shake each other’s hands after the game nonetheless.
That wasn’t the case in the Bernabeu last night, however, as the two biggest stars on show seemed to make a concerted effort not to acknowledge each other following Real Madrid’s away goal Super Cup triumph over their Catalan rivals.
Make of their exchange what you will after watching the video above, but it seems fairly clear to us that, like a pair of jilted lovers, they went out of their way to make sure they didn’t cross each other’s paths.
Whether or not Messi and Ronaldo like each other doesn’t mean a great deal, of course, as long as they continue to do the business on the pitch and both of them maintained their usual excellence last night.
After Gonzalo Higuain had put the hosts into an early lead, Ronaldo made it two after a magnificent piece of individual brilliance when he back-flicked the ball high over the head of Gerard Pique and finished past Victor Valdes.
To all those who still doubt his big-game capabilities by the way, that was the fifth consecutive Clasico in which the Portuguese has got on the scoresheet.
Not to be outdone, Messi got ten-man Barcelona back in the game with a brilliant free-kick just short of half-time, although it proved only scant consolation in the end as Real saw the game out to triumph on away goals.
From a neutral’s perspective and in what is a good omen for the season ahead, the most recent Clasicos seem less affected by the pettiness that has gone before... discounting the Messi/Ronaldo snub last night, of course.
