Platini reckons Euro 2020 should be held in "12-13 cities"

30/06/2012 11:07 am

Quite a few of us at JOE aren't too happy with UEFA president Michel Platini bloating Euro 2016 from 16 to 24 teams yet wait until you hear his Euro 2020 plans...

While Ireland could be part of a joint hosting bid alongside Scotland and Wales for the tournament, Platini has his own ideas on should host - namely, at least half of the participating countries. Yes, you heard us.

While Platini has came under criticism in the past for voting in favour of Qatar's hosting of the 2022 World Cup and his Luddite stance on goalline technology, his comments today could have a crippling effect on the travel costs for fans wanting to see the tournament in eight years time.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, Platini revealed his plan for the 60th anniversary of the tournament, stating: It's an idea, let's see if we make a European Championship throughout Europe in 2020 for 60 years of the Euros. It's an idea I like.

"The Executive Committee also like the idea. There is nothing definitive. We will see in December or January if you do a Euros in one or two countries or in a dozen cities in Europe. "

Is it just us or are UEFA and FIFA trying to outdo one another when it comes to crazy international tournament ideas at this stage?
