O'Neill forced to Twigg Hoops line-up

20/10/2011 5:41 pm

Shamrock Rovers have been dealt a blow ahead of their Europa League clash with PAOK Salonika after star striker Gary Twigg was ruled out of contention.

The Scottish-born marksman is suffering with a hamstring problem and will more than likely be replaced in a thankless lone frontman role by Karl Sheppard against the Greek side, as the Hoops look likely to replicate the ultra-defensive formation showcased in the competition so far.

Michael O’Neill’s side are pointless (in the numerical sense) in Group A so far, but a shock win tonight would elevate them above PAOK in the table.

Hoops fans will be hoping that a planned protest at the game by opposition supporters over impending austerity measures in Greece, a country even worse off than our own, will distract PAOK and allow Rovers to take advantage.

Kick-off in Salonika is at 8.05pm. The game is live on 3e from 7.30pm.
