Shane Long’s tongue may have been firmly in his cheek when he made comments to that effect, but it’s no harm being optimistic, right?

Like all Irish fans, Shane Long’s ideal scenario at the Euros is beating Italy in the final group game to set up a quarter-final meeting with the Auld Enemy, but unfortunately, it is only a dream at this stage.

Realistically, Long sees the opening game against Croatia as the most important: Get a result in that one and the possibilities are endless; lose and it will be an uphill battle from there on out.

Before the Irish squad leave the country, however, they face Bosnia on Saturday at the Aviva Stadium, which Long believes will be an ideal test for the Boys in Green before the real business starts in just over a fortnight’s time.
