'Let's not go for a sing-song'. Roy Keane's take on Ireland's 4-0 defeat tonight.

14/06/2012 10:57 pm

While we watched Billo, Eamo and the lads discuss the 4-0 hammering by Spain in hushed tones, ITV had Roy Keane having a bit of a rant. Here’s the clip of what he said.

There was always a chance Roy Keane would get upset watching this Irish team, especially if took a beating and Roy had to field dumb questions from Adrian Chiles. It happened this evening.

Roy, like every Irish person, didn’t enjoy watching his national side getting ripped apart by Spain but he wasn’t in the mood to applaud the magnificent performance of the fans either, like Keith Andrews did after the game.

Heree the clip of Andrews' interview and Roy's response.

"I think the players and even the supporters, they all have to change their mentality, it’s just nonsense from players speaking after the games about how great the supporters are," Keane said.

"Listen, the supporters want to see the team doing a lot better and not giving daft goals away like that. I’m not too happy with all that nonsense.

"To praise the supporters for sake of it … Let’s change that attitude towards Irish supporters.

"They want to see the team winning – let’s not kid ourselves, we’re a small country, we’re up against it, but let's not just go along for the sing-song every now and again.”

Now, depending on your view of the former Manchester United midfielder you will either agree 100 per cent or disagree 100 per cent with his analysis.

In typical Roy fashion he will split the country on this one, but we suspect there might be more in the anti-Roy camp this time.

The players were not spared either, with Keane also saying: "It's a reality check for a lot of the Irish players. I think a lot of them think they're top players, and it goes to show that they're so far behind a lot of these players."

So, what do you make of Roy's comments. Let us know below.

I both agree and disagree, sure it should be a reality check for the Irish players, they should get their act together. But Keane could've said fair play to the fans anyway, or something along the lines of hoping the fans get the team they deserve someday. It wasn't good, and singing the loudest doesn't make up for that, but at least it shows heart. Keane throws the baby out with the bath water too often.

Roy has praised the Irish travelling fans several times since the tournament started, while on air for ITV. The other night, he said that their energy and support would be crucial to the team. He was not criticising their spirit or their singing tonight. He was asking them to be more demanding of the team and not settle for just a good night out any more. If anything, it was a pop at Keith Andrews for the attitude, "well, it doesn't matter, look, we have the best fans in the world." The supporters deserve better. The defending tonight WAS shocking! Don't patronise the fans - give them better football.

For soemone who's opposed to fans going along for a 'sing song', this is not what he said in a program on the 'Fields of Athenry' a year ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLG2VmfSxNA#t=0m37s

Can't say that I've ever really been a fan of his but this time he's 'Spot On'. We go to games to enoy them, which is great, but we also go to win. What Nation doesn't? The entire setup needs to be looked at. Too many players as Keane more or less says, are over the hill. This team just seemed to lack belief in themselves. The supporters we great as usual and may have enjoyed the pint but it's the points that count. No point going to a game without a winning mentality and unfortunately that's what was missing in these two games.......................as was our defence, our keeper and our strike force.

Roy is one of my favourite players of all time and I have massive respect for him but hes totally wrong here. The fans have paid hundreds if not thousands of euro to go and support the team. And yes, part of that is havin a beer and havin the craic. What does he want the fans to do? Boo the team after losing 4-0? I was at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and ya never heard anyone complaining about the Irish fans who were there for a "sing-song". Cop on Roy. The team losing had nothing to do with the fans and everything to do with the management and the quality of players that we have. We should be thankful for the great fans we have, and we are the envy of many other teams for the way we support our country.

I don't understand why they allow all the time Spanish to play with them like in the ping pong game... they were not attacking, not trying to catch the ball, allowing them all the time to get closer ... children would play better! (Sic!)

For god sake all he is doing is asking the players and supporters to have a bit higher expectation and belief in themselves. How do half of ye not see that.

Roy is right. On all the papers in Ireland tomorrow it will be about the Irish fans and not the match, yes the fans were fantastic and I wouldn't expect anything else from then but the team just weren't good enough or even near it to be honest. Roy never mentioned anything about booing the team or anything along those lines he was simply pointing out that at the end of the day it was a soccer tournament and not a singing tournament and the faster people realize this the better it is for us Irish. We need an improvement, an improvement I think which I think should start as soon as possible with the likes of Coleman, Hoolahan and McClean in the side...

Trappatoni fielded the strongest team available, there are no world class players In Ireland, Spain are World Champions and European Champions, they are the best footballing team on the planet...that's the reality, 53 teams tried to qualify for Euro 2012, there were only 14 places and Ireland was one of them be proud of that, be proud of the supporters who travelled to Gdansk in their tens of thousands in tough economic times to support their team, they were singing at the end of the game when every other fan would have f***** off in disgust, does that leave them open to ridicule....maybe they are more in touch with reality than Roy Keane.

Roy is right, Ireland is a small country and Im not even sure football is the national game so getting to World Cups and European Championships on a regular basis should be commended, but advancing beyond that takes world class players not journeymen,

Should the fans go home to their hotel rooms and mope or riot instead to display their displeasure, I admired Roy Keane the player but as a man he lacks dignity and is just another loudmouth football analyst, if football is so easy why did he fail as a manager at Sunderland and Ipswich where the players derided his tactics and savage style of management.

wouldnt be the biggest fan of roy (saipan) but i have to say he is dead right. why are we always happy with second best, its just not good enough. yes we all agree that the fans are 110% behind the team, but are we getting 110% from the team ?. how many times do we give the ball away, not just in this match. why dont the players put the pressure on the opposition, maybe towards the end they did but that should be for the full ninety. come on lads lets get real its not the european fans championships.

Totally, 100% agree with Keane. I live in France and was watching the match with French friends who praised the Irish fans attitude when the team was down 4-0. They said, rightly, that in France, the supporters would have started booing their team after the first goal. I would go myself for something down the middle. Don't boo them but expect more from them and let them know you expect more.

It's no surprise that anytime Roy voices his opinion on anything Ireland related those who stood in the anti Roy camp in 2002 will roll out the usual 'you walked out on your country' line etc etc. However what they fail to remember is that only for Roy's performances and standards around that time we would have been nowhere near that World Cup.
