25/06/2012 8:30 am

The family of the young Irish fan who died while attending the Euros, James Nolan, have expressed their gratitude to Robbie Keane following his tribute yesterday.

Ireland captain Robbie Keane proved that he is a fitting leader of his nation yesterday when he produced a special LA Galaxy shirt with ‘RIP James Nolan’ on it. The Dubliner grabbed the shirt from the sideline after making a scoring return for his MLS club.

Keane was in touch with James’s family before the game to pass on his condolences and he confirmed that the shirt will be sent to the Nolan family.

Speaking in the Irish Daily Star, James’s brother-in-law Gareth Dudley spoke of what the gesture meant to the family.

“I just can’t express how much joy and happiness it has brought to the family. James’s mother and father watched it [the video of Keane’s tribute], his brother and sister also. They just thought it was a beautiful tribute to James.

“James would have loved it. To see Robbie Keane holding up a jersey with his name on it... he would have been flabbergasted. The family could not be prouder of the tribute Robbie has paid James. It’s amazing what he’s done.

“They would just like to pass the message on to Robbie, to thank him and say that they really appreciate everything that he has done.”

James’s funeral takes place today in Blessington and FAI chief executive John Delaney, as well as some fo the Irish squad, are expected to be in attendance.
