Were these the tweets that caused James McClean to quit Twitter?

09/05/2012 9:00 am

Yesterday Irish international James McClean shut down his Twitter account in response to death threats and what he described as "dog's abuse" from Northern Ireland fans. He wasn't kidding.

Born in Derry, the 23-year-old Irish international had represented Northern Ireland in his youth, a fact which has not been forgotten by certain sections of Northern Ireland fans, particularly after his Euro 2012 call-up earlier this week.

Having received constant abuse from online trolls following Monday's squad announcement, McClean defiantly shot back a tweet at his critics, writing: "just worry about watchin ur own country at the euros... oh wait".

This remark riled up his detractors to such an extent that the midfielder shut down his account last night. Below are examples of just some of the worst abuse which was sent the Sunderland player's way this week:

Amid all that abuse, we're not sure if McClean managed to spot a light-hearted tweet from Everton's Shane Duffy, his fellow Derry native and occasional Ireland colleague:

Are people not noticing the amount of people getting done for abusive tweets?

That would infer that those muppets had the brains to notice anything outside their own little world.

The last tweet there is by not an insult or criticism, it's by Republic of Ireland international Shane Duffy. He was only joking!

      Hi Mike.

Yep, we know the Shane Duffy tweet was a joke, so we did have a line mentioning that "amid all the abuse" we had a light-heared tweet from McClean's Ireland team-mate.

      Anyway, thanks for the comment.

      Cheers,

Hopefully the Irish or NI authorities can act on this abuse, it's just not on.

Orange Order narrowmindedness......they always had a horrible nasty element amongst them and are only confirming it.....probably the same brainless ones who attacked the schoolchildren a few years back. I hope James McClean has a glittering carrer with club and country.

He should just post a picture of him standing, draped in a tri colour next to his bank account giving them the middle finger.
