330 new 'green' jobs to be created

11/07/2011 4:45 pm

Some 330 new jobs are to be created with the introduction of €4m in funding for ‘green’ travel projects outside the Greater Dublin Area.

The funding comes as part of the ‘Jobs Initiative - Smarter Travel Funding Package’.

Alan Kelly, Minister for Public and Commuter Transport, said the new funding package will “hopefully get people off the dole” and “improve our transport and tourism potential”.

“This €4m allocation is in addition to €10m worth of jobs-intensive sustainable travel projects which have already been announced for the Greater Dublin Area and the regional cities," the junior minister said.

Minister Kelly has allocated some of the cash to specific projects such as cycle lanes and bicycle parking in Cavan town and the upgrading of footpaths and traffic-claiming measures in some parts of Donegal including, Gweedore, Buncrana, Ballybofey, Fintown, Glencolmcille, Letterkenny, Milford, Donegal Town, Muff and Rathmelton.

According to Silicon Republic it is estimated that every €100,000 used will create up to 13 jobs and will create around 333 jobs in total. Minister Kelly also said that these projects could lead to some “25 person-years employment”.

Don’t worry if you live outside of Cavan and Donegal because the money will also be used on projects in Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Limerick, Mayo, Monaghan, North Tipperary, Offaly, Sligo, South Tipperary, Roscommon, Westmeath and Wexford.
